چکیده

Tools for fitting low-complexity nonlinear models based on experimental data are examined through the example problem of finding a reduced-order model suitable for control of a combustion instability operating in a limit cycle. This proceeds in four parts; physical modeling, linear system identification, nonlinear analysis, and validation test design. It is shown how the nonlinear tools of describing functions, bifurcation methods and manifold analysis assist in developing a simple nonlinear model capable of describing the data and consistent with physical understanding. The system being modeled is a lean gas turbine combustor which exhibits a sustained mid-range (100–1000 Hz) limit cycle instability. The closed-loop experimental data does not contain a sufficiently rich spectrum for confident modeling in the first linear system identification phase. Despite the paucity of information quality, a grey-box nonlinear model is created and parametrized which provides an explanation both of the limit-cycle fundamental oscillation and of a high frequency nonharmonic signal also present. The model structure is explored and various operating conditions simulated to understand the model better. The validation and=or refinement of this model is then considered. The model validation problem is important because of the poor information content of the periodic limit cycle data. The challenge is to provide a practically feasible, small excitation to the loop to improve identifiability and to provide qualitative tests of model performance. We examine this problem by considering the nonlinear dynamics of the model class and feasible excitation mechanisms. r 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Model - based Active Control of Thermoacoustic Instability in Continuous Combustion Processes

Thermoacoustic instability is frequently found in continuous combustion processes in propulsion, power generation, and heating. Active control has been increasingly pursued in recent years to suppress the pressure oscillations which result from this instability, while maintaining performance objectives such as low NOx emission and high efficiency. This thesis considers the physics behind the th...

Characterizing Lean Spark Ignition Combustion Instability in Terms of a Low-Order Map

We investigate lean-fueling cyclic dispersion in spark ignition engines in terms of experimental nonlinear mapping functions representing the connection between past and future combustion events. Nonlinear mapping functions provide a relatively easy method for identifying the deterministic dynamics associated with lean combustion instability, even in the presence of very high levels of noise. A New High-order Takagi-Sugeno Fuzzy Model Based on Deformed Linear Models

Amongst possible choices for identifying complicated processes for prediction, simulation, and approximation applications, high-order Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy models are fitting tools. Although they can construct models with rather high complexity, they are not as interpretable as first-order TS fuzzy models. In this paper, we first propose to use Deformed Linear Models (DLMs) in consequence pa...

Nonlinear theory of combustion stability in liquid rocket engine based on chemistry dynamics

Detailed models of combustion instability based on chemistry dynamics are developed. The results show that large activation energy goes against the combustion stability. The heat transfer coefficient between the wall and the combust gas is an important bifurcation parameter for the combustion instability. The acoustics modes of the chamber are in competition and cooperation with each other for ...

Active Control of Combustion Instability: Theory and Practice

One of the most successful applications of control technology in fluid systems is in the context of dynamic instability in continuous combustion systems. Recent results in this area have shown unequivocally that active control is not only a feasible technology for reducing the unsteady pressure oscillations, but also that the approach can be scaled up to large-scale industrial rigs. Models of c...
